Whales and Dolphins

Here the sea mammals and their adaptations to marine life in the Canary Islands are described.

In addition, the way in which the local species are explored and preserved through scientific work and conservation projects is presented.

Introduction to cetaceans

Both the mighty whales and the playful dolphins belong to the cetaceans. Here we will give you a general overview of what you can see there.

Adaptation to life in the ocean

About 50 million years ago, the ancestors of the cetaceans lived on land. The transition to a life in the water has made numerous adaptations necessary.

Frequent species

Here we present the species that are usually found here on site with a short description and a small photo gallery.

Research

Even if the cetaceans are large, it is difficult to study them, because they elude our observation most of the time. Thanks to the organizations dedicated to their research in the Canary Islands.

List of species

Here you will find a complete list of the species seen in the Canary Islands. Of these, perhaps 7 are more common here off La Gomera. These are listed separately for the more common species.
